This is Flo and Jack.

They are my grandparents. That shot was taken in July 1997, when they were getting ready for an evening at the Royal Opera House. I know this, because it's written on the back in Grandma's writing. She must have sent it to me in my first year at university. It's got a big smudge on it, which I think it picked up because it was on my noticeboard for the next 4 years.

Grandma was a cheerful and almost relentlessly optimistic soul. She would see the good in almost every situation. She loved a party, loved good food and a nice glass of wine. Her singing was legendary (even if the tunes were a bit hit and miss, and the words a bit hazy), and she didn't give up dancing even when her knees stopped working.

Grandma and all her boys. My Dad is the one with the furry chest.

She suffered with dementia for the last 6-8 years, and her body finally quit on March 18th. Today we held her funeral, with much food, many friends, and singing. I think she would have approved.

Once she said to me somethign along the lines of "You? You can do anything you put your mind to you." I remember that when I'm struggling, with work, or running, whatever, and I try to make sure she was right.
