Running for home

I started this year really well with the running and then had a whole series of bad colds, a bout of mastitis (?!!), another cold, and the running has generally fallen by the wayside. Actually, so has cycling. And quite a few other things, like staying awake to 10pm. 

Now, don't get me wrong, I've been working on it. I've upped my fruit and veg input to around 6 portions a day. I've started using Yakult after a paper was released saying that it reduced the number of colds athletes got in the winter. I'm taking multivitamins with iron, and I have some super-whizzy immune-system-boosting horse pills from my uncle's wife that seem to have really helped. I'm actually feeling pretty good right now, so it's just a question of getting back up with the running and cycling. (Oh, and staying well. My doctor blamed it on undergraduates, so I'm not looking forward to October.)

Trouble is, I'm a bit bored of the roads around where we live. And a bit intimitdated by the hill too, if I'm honest. And I still don't really want to get up at 6am to go running. I know, technically, it's the best way to get it done, but I just crawl back into bed more often than not. So on Tuesday, I decided to run home from the university. 

It's around 3.3 miles, and Clarkie took my stuff home so that wasn't a problem. The route is off-road for the first 1.5-2 miles, so that's different. The scenery is farmland, so better. The only problems are that the first off-road 1.5-2 miles are pretty much all uphill, and the path is about 6 inches wide and quite hard to spot. But I did it (with much walking), and successfully ran most of the flat-then-downhill bit after that. I was super slow, but I felt really good when I was done. I know I'll get up that hill in one go eventually, and there are plenty of ways I can add distance to the route as I get stronger. 

The best bit was that I felt excited about my running for the first time in ages. And believe me, when I do make it up that hill there will be a big, triumphant tweet, status AND blogpost!
