Running again

Yep. I went and bought me some trainers, dug out my kit and I’m out there and running again.

I guess you could call it a New Year’s resolution of sorts. It’s almost unrelated really, but it’s as convenient a reason as any! Basically, I ran a marathon back in 2005 and I don’t think I did it very well. I mean, I did it, but I walked a lot, knackered my planter fascias and took nearly 6 hours. I would put a lot of the pain down to just not training enough. I only started in the January for the race in the April.

So although I finished it I have always been disappointed in my effort. That picture is me on the tube afterwards, having cried my eyes out after I finished. Most unlike me.

As it happens, in 2 years’ time my Mum turns 60. Her birthday is in December and she likes to spend it in Florida, so we’re going to just have to suck it up and go out there for Christmas (poor us…). Coincidentally, there is a Walt Disney World marathon in early January. So I think that’s a perfect opportunity for me to put a longer training period together and try and put that ghost to rest.

To start with I’m aiming for running regularly for 30 continuous minutes. At the moment it appears that I can run more than I used to be able to (first run out was 8.5 minutes running, 1.5 minutes walking repeated 3 times), but my joints and muscles don’t like the hills around here. My shins and knees are not impressed. But I think I’m not far off the time, just got to make it a habit.

And Clare Strongman, you have a lot to answer for!
