Rip it out
So, more on the stove. Today we had a nice man come round to tell us it was possible. In order to get his opinion, we had to make some minor modifications to our current fire setup...
That's what it looked like when we moved in. Not the most hideous gas fire ever I suppose, but still. Not really to my taste. So, it's gone.
Rocking and reeling
More on the reeling, I'll be honest.
Last term went surprisingly well. I managed to stay mostly on top of things, and barring one little mad rush at the end there I think it went smoothly. This term seems to be whizzing past faster than anything I've ever felt before, and I don't like it!
Second life
One of my courses this term (Interactive Learning Environments - there will be a category in the University section soon) is based in Second Life, so I joined up around Christmas time.
I have to say, I don't really get it. To me it feels like a chat room with images, and I never really got into chat rooms. But it raises some really interesting questions. Let's start with the avatars. Mine has purple spiky hair, bright green eyes, and is substantially more toned than me. I admit that there's some wish-fulfillment going on there, and I don't think I'm the only one doing that. I don't think everyone is, by any stretch of the imagination, but it's an interesting thing.
Three down
I am really hoping that the law of things coming in threes is applicable to me at the moment, because if not my other 7 digits need to be worried.
We'll start with the little finger of my left hand. The top joint is a delicate shade of purply-yellow. Not the nail (fortunately), just below that.
Challenged
My team manager at work the other day said something that rankled. He disputed that we had the capability within the team to develop a prototype AJAX website in VB.net running off a SQLServer database.
I am halfway tempted to prove him wrong. Plus I reckon I could then rework it off the same back end in an entire range of other technologies: C#, Ruby on Rails, Flex...
On one hand, it would be so satisfying to rub his nose in it. On the other, it would be a great exercise in all these different technologies. On the third hand, it could be a spectacular waste of time. Decisions...
